Qi Baishi

 

Qi Baishi (Chinese, 1864 – 1957) is one of the most influential and popular artists in the 19th and 20th century. He is best known for his works featuring vegetations, animals, insects and landscapes; focusing on the spiritual, ephemeral and mystical qualities of the human condition.

 

Qi experienced fame and success during his lifetime, which has grown rapidly since his death at the age of ninety-three. His paintings are admired by Chinese citizens, as well as art scholars and collectors internationally. One of his works sold at the China Guardian Spring Auction 2011 in Beijing for over US$65 million.
